Hatton Promotions - building British talent
Following his victory over Kostya Tszyu in June 2005, Ricky Hatton was recognised
as the best fighter at his weight in the World, which he still remains and at the
same time one of the best boxers ever to come out of the UK. His continued success
has made him the most popular boxer in the World, with an unprecedented level of
support from his loyal fans. His victory over Tszyu coincided with him leaving his
long-term promoter Frank Warren and the resultant legal proceedings. As a consequence,
he started spending more time with his solicitor, Gareth Williams, who was to become
more influential in Ricky's career.
Gareth was a Partner in a Manchester law firm and head of their Sports Law Department,
having a wealth of experience in a number of sports, albeit he had begun to concentrate
more on boxing work, mainly as a result of his work with Ricky.
In 2007, Ricky had three fights in the home of boxing, namely Las Vegas, each fight
bigger than the last. As he was playing a greater role in the promotions, Ricky
began to assemble a trusted team around him. In America, Ricky was promoted by Golden
Boy the promotional company which had been formed by Oscar De La Hoya a few years
earlier. Oscar became a firm friend and gave Ricky the blueprint to form his own
promotional company. It was therefore a natural progression that Hatton Promotions
was formed in January 2009 with Gareth Williams at the helm.
The aim of the company is to become the most successful boxing promotional company
in England. The company has already forged good links with trainers, managers, amateur
clubs and fellow promoters. The company's philosophy is to treat the fighters fairly
and always deliver its promise. Ricky and Gareth believe that if they have happy,
motivated fighters, who are well looked after, this will lead to success in and
out of the ring. As a boxer, Ricky has always been a crowd-pleaser and it is his
aim to achieve this in his promotional career.
